We want the scoop on Anthro Music
So let's talk music for a moment....
Specifically, the amazing tunes that you hear while strolling through Anthropologie.
A fellow reader and fan, Sarah, is dying to know about the music that plays in the stores.
She was told that they 'pipe in the music via satelite from home office in Philly.'
I didn't know this. Is that true? Can anyone tell us?
Do they share the playlist, details, etc?
Comment if you can share with us : )

That is 100% true. I work there. There isn't a ~playlist~. The music is completely random. Sometimes I won't hear the same song for another month. I like it that way.
Being played from Philly is true for some stores who might have an upgraded system/newer store.
But for the majority of stores, they have a 5 disc CD changer that they put CD's into to play. During opening hours, the CD must be approved by Home Office (and they give out a list of CD's/Artists pre-approved).
After hours, girls play whatever they want to get them through the 2+ hours of closing!
We never had music piped in when I used to work there. We had a CD changer with approved CDs to play on shuffle, at a specific volume. Would have been cool to have music totally random coming from home office though...It gets tiring listening to the same French songs on repeat during an 8 hour shift. But at least it was good music!
I work there as well, and ive never even heard that satellite thing. We have like...5 or 6 cds that get mailed to us, and then we play them. Sometimes us employees can bring in songs, get them approved by the manager, and play them. New cds get mailed every month.
Great info ladies...thanks!!!
sofe - what anthro do you work at that you don't have a satellite. that would stink!
i used to work at anthro this past summer and we had the music via satellite, apparently we used to play cds (there was a major stack of old ones in the office) but now we had a new fancy thing. it made me sad because id hear the same songs over and over (even though it was satellite) and i'd want to know who it was! i really wish anthro would sell sample cds with those artists. because if you work there, they REALLY get stuck in your head!
The new Madison, Wisconsin store has satellite music, but it displays the names of songs being played. So if you're ever curious about what's being played, just ask.
Customers ask me all the time who plays a certain song.
the location where i work definitely has the home office satellite thing. and you can look back at the last 5 songs to see the artist and title. unfortunately it's locked away though so it's kinda a hassle to find out the info. :( loooove the music though!
i just discovered this blog, but i wish i had seen it earlier. they like to play a lot of folksy music. Feist, Matt Costa, KT Tunstall...I'm pretty good at recognizing the songs.
oh and i think i heard greg laswell a little while ago. san diego artist. check him out, he has some good stuff. also might wanna check out molly jenson and jon foreman
ok seriously, i am addicted to anthropologie. i don't spend a toonn of money as of yet seeing as the whole "struggling artist" scenario comes into play a little too much.. but its inspiring just being in there! the music is definitely addictive and i have been googling to find sites to buy cd's or get playlists. im goin nuts!

I don't know what's playing at ALL of the stores, but the music service for many of the stores (not sure of the exact #) is provided by a company called PlayNetwork. I can see why people might think it's satellite radio though when they look at the players. They do resemble them.
Also, a friend of mine at Play is the music programmer for the Anthropologie stores that use PlayNetwork's services. (That's how I came across this; I was curious about what people were saying about her music selections.) My impression (and I don't know specifics) is that some of it is selected by Anthropologie and some is selected by her based on what fits in with their requests. You will only hear that mix at Anthropologie because it's a custom mix tailored specifically to them. Nobody else is allowed to use it.
I realize it's very late to be replying, but I couldn't stand allowing their wonderful music to be attributed to some satellite radio channel that anyone can select. :) My friend has fantastic taste in music; how lucky am I to be able to cite her as one of my primary go-to people for music recommendations?!
i was just doing a search for an anthro music station too. i just made a pandora station based on the artists i've seen through this post (kt tunstall etc)... does anyone else have other's they'd add?
Can you buy client compilations from PlayNetwork? I would buy the holiday arrangements they are playing right now.
